En Flagrant

En Flagrant Collection

· John Wolfcub developed the concept of the „En Flagrant" collection together with the artist BUEV, who brought it to life across the twelve works. The collection of twelve works signed by BUEV bears the title “En Flagrant” a phrase that captures the very essence of the cycle: the exact moment of being caught in the act. Each canvas revisits the same characters, placed within an enigmatic, theatrical atmosphere, with mysterious figures set in an unreal architectural setting. The backgrounds are built from white and grey geometric fragments, a labyrinth of angular forms, fractured planes, and disassembled mechanical structures. This decomposition of space into overlapping planes points directly to Analytical Cubism and mechanical Futurism, creating the perfect stage for a mystery about to unfold. Against this backdrop, the contrast between the solid black silhouettes and the white, fragmented setting gives rise to a remarkable dramatic tension. That distinctive sense of silence, mystery, and suspended time, so characteristic of metaphysical painting, sets in as if the entire scene had frozen a split second before its dénouement. This is where BUEV's subtlety comes into play. His characters want to appear tough, threatening, ceremonious - yet in reality they are slightly comic and absurd. The artist renders them with deliberate skill: the intentionally deformed body shape, the awkward garment, one eye instead of two, the unusual, almost disjointed movement. They are caught precisely at the moment they were plotting something : a heist, a break-in to a forbidden place, ready to break some rule. Hence the central message of the cycle: "any tough guy, the moment he is caught, is no longer tough." The bravado collapses instantly into embarrassment. En Flagrant immortalizes exactly this moment of exposure, being caught red-handed, transforming the menacing figure into a vulnerable, human, and deeply ironic character. These are works with a strong, personal artistic voice, compositionally mature, cleverly fusing Cubism, metaphysical Surrealism, and narrative symbolism. By repeating the same protagonists across the twelve scenes, BUEV builds not merely a series of paintings, but a true human comedy in a metaphysical key, a spiritual meditation on pride, appearance, and the fragility of the mask we all wear.
